Substituting Honey for Sugar October 20 2014


Honey is a fabulous substitute for sugar.  We use it for everything!  It does change the cooking process slightly, so follow these tips for successful recipes.


  • Replace 1 cup of sugar with 3/4 cup of honey.  Reduce the liquid in the recipe by 1/4 cup.  Add a pinch of baking soda to reduce the acidity of the honey.
  • Beat candies longer and wrap them tightly to help keep the honey from absorbing moisture.
  • Cook jams and jellies at a higher temperature.
  • When baking, lower the oven temperature by 25° F. to prevent over-browning.


Honey will keep your foods moister than sugar does, which is just another reason why we love this wonderful substitution for baking specifically!
