Using Honey to Enhance Exercise and Athletic Activities August 25 2016

Honey provides 17 grams of carbohydrates per tablespoon, making it an excellent source of energy for your body.

Use honey before your workout.

Nutritionists recommend eating carbs before exercising for an added energy boost.  If eaten prior to working out, the honey is released into the system at a steady rate throughout the event.

Consume honey during your workout.

This can help your muscles stay nourished longer and will delay fatigue. There is no need for supplements when you can enjoy pure, raw honey. Try mixing some honey into your water bottle for a tasty and beneficial addition.

Eat honey after you exercise.

Research shows that consuming a combo of carbs and protein within 30 minutes of exercise is ideal to decrease delayed-onset muscle soreness. Honey is the perfect carbohydrate to use!

Some tasty tips...

  • Add honey to your water bottle for a great way to stay hydrated while providing yourself with a natural energy boost.
  • Snacks are a great way to add extra fruits and vegetables to your diet. Try mixing peanut butter and honey, or honey and light cream cheese, as a dip for fresh fruits or vegetables.
  • Peanut butter and honey sandwiches on whole wheat bread are the perfect combo of carbohydrates, protein and fat. We love San Diego Honey Company Vanilla Bean Infused Honey for our peanut butter sandwiches.

Raw Bee Pollen

Bee pollen has been said to help clear up acne conditions. It is thought to also be a great anti-aging food and ingredient for the skin due to its very high ORAC value (it absorbs damaging free radicals).

Bee pollen has a very high content of Nucleic Acids (the building blocks of RNA and DNA) and may prevent premature aging of the cells and stimulate the growth of new skin tissues.

Pollen Plus: Bee Pollen Benefits for Weight Loss and Physical Activity January 30 2015

The benefits of consuming bee pollen to assist with pollen allergies are fairly well known but this wonderful natural product can help us in so many more ways.

At this time of year a lot of people are trying to lose a few pounds and focusing on improving their physical activity – bee pollen can be a wonderful help in these areas too!

Bee Pollen contains Phenylalanine, an amino acid which as a natural appetite suppressant – all completely naturally and safe.  Phenylalanine actually works to balance the body by signaling fullness if you need to lose weight and hunger if you need to gain weight, pretty amazing.  Science has tried to copy this phenomenal amino acid and there are numerous ‘weight loss’ products containing phenylpropanolamine – a man-made product that comes with lots of warnings!  Why subject you body to chemicals when a beautiful natural product like Pollen Plus can help.

Bee Pollen also contains about 15% (by volume) lecithin.  Lecithin helps flush fat from the body.  Lecithin rich bee pollen is also known to help cholesterol by lowering LDL (low density lipoproteins - the bad one) and increasing beneficial HDL lipoproteins.

Bee Pollen is also known to help eliminate cravings.

Famous German naturalist Francis Huber called bee pollen ‘the greatest body builder on Earth”.

The British Sports Council discovered that taking bee pollen can help increase strength by as much as 40 – 50% Wow!  Pass the Pollen Plus!

Of course to get all of these wonderful benefits the bee pollen you take has to be viable.  It’s a delicate product that was not designed to sit in plastic bags etc. bees collect it and mix it with honey – that’s exactly what we at San Diego Honey Company do.  As we like to say ‘we just copy what the bees do because they know what they are doing’.  By blending the bee pollen into the honey with our proprietary process that does not heat the pollen or honey above the raw stage we believe we have created a potent delivery system for the miraculously beneficial bee pollen.  Our raw honey perfectly preserves the honey and the natural enzymes and the pH of the honey help to break the pollen down into a more easily digestible product.

Try some Pollen Plus, it's also absolutely delicious!

Raw Manuka Honey from New Zealand November 09 2014

Manuka Honey from New Zealand

Not all honey is the same, not by a long shot.

At San Diego Honey Company, we believe in providing only the most premium products. We are pleased to add Manuka honey to our line. Unlike the rest of our local San Diego honey, our Manuka honey comes to us from New Zealand.

Manuka flower (Leptospermum scoparium)

Manuka is a Maori word that refers to the medicinal flower manuka, or tea tree as it's known in Australia.  Maoris are the indigenous people of New Zealand, they have used manuka honey for thousands of years.  All raw honey has antibacterial qualities, however Manuka goes above and beyond. Hydrogen peroxide is produced when honey is in contact with the skin or internal tissues.  Manuka honey is unique in that it also contains methylglyoxal (MG). MG comes from the conversion of another compound - dihydroxyacetone - that is found in high concentration in the nectar of manuka flowers. The higher the concentration of MG in Manuka honey, the stronger the antibiotic effect.

It is important to understand that not all Manuka is the same. The antibacterial quality of some kinds of honey may be 100 times more potent than others.  Honey producers created the UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) scale for rating this type of honey. Not all brands contain significant amounts of MG, and it is important as consumers to be able to tell the difference.  A rating of 10 UMF or higher is considered potent enough to be therapeutic. Our supplier, Wedderspoon, categorizes their honey into two grades, Active 12+ and Active 16+. We are carrying the most premium line, Active 16+. 'Active' manuka honey has stronger properties than regular manuka honey.  Unlike many of their competitors, Wedderspoon also factors in live enzymes, pollen count, chemical/residue analysis, antioxidant levels, the raw status, and various other phytochemical factors.  So, keep in mind that you may find 'manuka honey' on store shelves it is quite a different product from Active Manuka Honey and be aware also that there has been 'impostor' or fraudulent manuka honey on the market due to the higher price that manuka honey garners.  Buying from a trusted source is very important.

There is no doubt that Manuka honey is a miraculous food.  It has been credited with healing many issues from acne to gingivitis, wounds and much more, However, here at San Diego Honey Co. we prefer to focus on the benefits that have scientific studies to prove the effectiveness:

Science has proven that Manuka honey is effective against h-pylori, the bacteria that cause stomach ulcers* and MRSA*. There are also reports of its usefulness in assisting with IBS* and gut issues. It is best known for use on wounds and burns, a major review of evidence by The Cochrane Review notes that honey may shorten healing times in mild burns compared with traditional dressings.

One of the most exciting studies is one conducted by the University of Sydney* that proved that medical grade manuka honey killed nearly every type of bacteria it was exposed to and, unlike antibiotics, did not create resistance in the bacteria.  One of the major health issues of our time is the overuse of antibiotics creating drug resistant bacteria or 'superbugs'.

Check out our Manuka Honey on the Go packets. They contain the same great Active 16+ Raw Manuka Honey that we have grown to love. They are perfect for the plane, added to lunches or snacks, and perfect for that mid-day energy boost!  Runners, these little pocket size packets are perfect for you! Our personal opinion is that honey straws are heated honey and not as nutritious an option as a pure raw honey, that's why we don't carry them, these little gems however are healthful and handy.  We also have this powerful honey in 250g or 500g jars.

Although we cite several scientific studies here, we encourage anyone with a medical condition to discuss use of manuka honey as a treatment with their doctor.

The possible side effects of manuka honey are:

  • Allergic reaction in people who are allergic to bees.
  • Raw honey should not be given to infants under 1 year of age.
  • Risk of a rise in blood sugar for diabetics.
  • Possible interaction with certain chemotherapy drugs due to the antibacterial effect of manuka honey.

Substituting Honey for Sugar October 20 2014

Honey is a fabulous substitute for sugar.  We use it for everything!  It does change the cooking process slightly, so follow these tips for successful recipes.

  • Replace 1 cup of sugar with 3/4 cup of honey.  Reduce the liquid in the recipe by 1/4 cup.  Add a pinch of baking soda to reduce the acidity of the honey.
  • Beat candies longer and wrap them tightly to help keep the honey from absorbing moisture.
  • Cook jams and jellies at a higher temperature.
  • When baking, lower the oven temperature by 25° F. to prevent over-browning.

Honey will keep your foods moister than sugar does, which is just another reason why we love this wonderful substitution for baking specifically!

We also love honey in:

  • Salad Dressings
  • Roasted Veggies
  • Grilled Meats
  • Ice Cream Topper
  • Cheese Platters (YUM!)

Boost Your Immune System October 15 2014

Who knew that honey could help boost your immune system?  Well, we did of course!

Honey has many health benefits that we will go over in future blog posts, but one fact that is very important right now is that honey is a great immune booster.  Anything to help boost your immune system during flu season is a plus in our opinion.

It has anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties that improve your digestive system.  These properties will help you stay healthy and fight disease.

One great way to incorporate honey into your daily diet is by starting your day with a warm cup of deliciousness.  Start every day with a spoonful of lemon juice and a spoonful of honey added to half a cup of warm water.  (We love our Ginger Lemon Infused).

Drink it down and think of all the fun you are going to have while your body stays healthy and refreshed.  Good bye sick days!

Honey Slows Signs of Aging October 05 2014

Well now isn't this great news?!

Part of the aging process is related to the slow depletion of enzymes in the body.  Raw honey is one of the few foods to help slow the depletion of enzymes through the ingestion of amylase. Amylase is the enzyme that breaks down sugars and carbohydrates. Amylase can restore damaged skin to give a softer, younger look.

Honey is also a great natural moisturizer for dry and parched skin.  It is able to attract and retain moisture, and rebuild the moisture level in the skin without making it oily. Honey provides a calming effect without irritating the skin, and helps replenish necessary skin moisture, especially during the winter months. This is why the golden liquid is such a popular anti aging skin care ingredient in many commercial moisturizing products including cleansers, creams, shampoos, shower gels, and conditioners. And because it's so gentle, it is suitable for sensitive skin and baby care products.

Just another fabulous reason to eat honey everyday!

Honey supports Bifidobacteria September 30 2014

Bifidobacteria is present in the gastrointestinal tract – which is essential for efficient digestion and good health. Honey contains prebiotics and probiotics that help the growth and activity of Bifidobacteria. It is an alkaline-forming food, and is similar to ingredients found in fruits. It doesn’t ferment in the stomach and it can be used to counteract indigestion.

Just another reason why we love honey.
